4 February 2022 PM announces $1.64 billion budget – and no new taxes

This year’s budget has laid to rest atleast one of residents’ fears: there will be no new taxes in 2022.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced a whopping $1.64 billion budget yesterday, which represents an increase of nine per cent over the estimated $1.51 billion spent in 2021.

Recurrent revenue is estimated at $975.6million for 2022, which is a 23 percent increase over the $790.9 million generated in 2021. 

The amount budgeted for capital receipts is $7 million, while grant funding this year is budgeted at $50.2million. On the expenditure side, estimated recurrent expenditure, excluding principal payments, is $961.1 million. 

A current account surplus of $14.5million is therefore projected for 2022, the PM said.

9 February 2022 Tourism Authority taking steps to attract visitors fromnon-traditional markets

Charmaine Spencer, Sales & Marketing Consultant with the ABTA, confirmed to Observer yesterday that that is indeed an objective of theirs, with work already ongoing to that end.

“Yes, we are, actually; we’re participating in the Dubai Expo and we have been doing a lot of work with the Middle East. We’ve seen a lot of questions coming out of [for example] the Scandinavian market and Russia, a lot of questions regarding our yachting sector and various[other sectors].

“We’re also doing work within Latin America, so we are looking to see some business generate out of the non-traditional markets,” she explained.

18 February 2022 Country set to see increased airlift

A number of additional direct flights to Antigua and Barbuda have been secured during talks with top airline industry officials at the Routes Americas conference that ended in San Antonio,Texas, yesterday.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez led a delegation to the popular annual event, to include Tourism Authority CEO ColinJames, plus Dean Fenton and Norrell Joseph from the New York office.

Some of the other issues discussed included the situation in Ukraine which Fernandez said could have an effect on oil prices, eventually affecting the cost of tickets.
